  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Bowman (1763-1825) was a settler who secured a free passage to New South Wales on the recommendation of Sir Joseph Banks. He arrived in the Barwell in May 1798 accompanied by his wife and two children. He was granted 100 acres (40 ha) at the Hawkesbury.

The Bowman family continued to make a mark on Hawkesbury affairs. John’s elder son George (1795-1878) was a pastoralist and politician who represented Northumberland and Hunter in the Legislative Council in 1851-56. William, the second son (1799-1874), was also a pastoralist with substantial holdings in the Bathurst area. The family’s pastoral interests also extended into the Talbragar River and Coolaburragundy River valleys. The property Queensborough, near Coolah, was one of these holdings, which was purchased by Ernest M Bowman.
