The Sydney Mint produced sovereigns until its closure in 1926 when it was subsumed into the new Commonwealth Mint in Canberra. It was one of only 4 mints in the world producing sovereigns, the others being Melbourne, Perth and Pretoria.

This coin is the sixth last sovereign to be struck by the Sydney Mint on 11th August 1926. According to the Deputy Master of the Mint, Mr A.M. Le Seouf, the final 50 sovereigns were produced on 11 August 1926 for a Sydney dignitary and the final 8 were individually pressed.
