  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Military Cross is awarded to commissioned officers of the substantive rank of Captain or below for distinguished and meritorious services in battle. A Bar is awarded for second and subsequent awards. It was established on 28 December 1915.

Bertie Lowing was awarded the Military Cross in 1917. The citation reads “Enemy counter attack point 248, Berkusie 12th November 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty he led his Squadron on to the attack with exceptional dash over difficult ground and under heavy shell fire. By his great cheerfulness and disregard of personal danger he kept the morale of his men at the highest under the most adverse conditions and by his quick initiative he successfully organised the consolidation. El Tine was held strongly by the enemy on the evening of 13th November 1917. Orders were received that the place had to be taken by dawn as the water was urgently required for the horses. This officer acting on his own initiative vigorously pushed forward with his Squadron before dawn captured an enemy outpost of six men and ascertained that the men were returning from El Tine before dawn leaving the entrance clear. This information enabled the whole division to move forward more quickly and obtain water for the horses at a time when they were in urgent need of it”.

In 1918 he was awarded a second Military Cross which was given as a Bar. The citation reads “For conspicuous gallantry and skilful leadership at Semahk on 25th September 1918 when his squadron was ordered to attack on the left side of the 11th L.H. Regiment. The enemy made a stubborn resistance and were subdued only after bitter hand to hand fighting in the buildings of the village. On the same day 25th September 1918 Captain Lowing by a smart flanking movement captured the enemy garrison at Tiberias consisting of 12 officers and 83 other ranks and 13 machine guns”.
