Frank McDonald (1929-2011) was one of Sydney's premier colonial art dealers during the 1970s and 1980s. He was director of the Clune Gallery and later the Thirty Victoria Street Gallery. He conducted detailed research into 19th century Australian art documenting the work of Conrad Martens, William Strutt, Augustus Earle and Eugene von Guerard among others. His research into von Guerard resulted in the book Eugene von Guerard (1980) which he co-authored with Candice Bruce and Edward Comstock.

Collection of research material by Frank McDonald into von Guerard’s life and times including working notes, correspondence with other dealers, collectors and art historians, photographs of the artist’s works, photocopies of primary and secondary sources and drafts. Also included are sets of index cards recording details of works by the artist including provenance, condition and exhibition history as well as references to articles and books about each work and about the artist.
