Wilcannia is a small town in the Central Darling Shire of north western New South Wales. It is part of the traditional home of the Barkinji people and its population is predominantly made up of Indigenous Australians. Many of the town's inhabitants live under poor social conditions.

In 1994 Stephen Dupont took part in the first World Press Photo Masterclasss held in Rotterdam, The Netherlands which had a theme assignment tiled Generation X. For his assignment Dupont photographed two series on Indigenous Australians, one in Redfern and the other in Wilcannia. Dupont focussed on the youth of the town and their struggles with personal identity, social challenges and community achievement.
