  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William John Victor Windeyer, born into a legal family in 1900 was a soldier in WWII, a Justice of the High Court, a legal educator and author of legal history. He was attached to the Sydney University Scouts in 1922 and promoted to captain, then major and in 1937 to lieutenant colonel, taking command of the Sydney University Regiment. He commanded the South Australian 2/48th Australian Infantry Battalion in WWII, fighting with the 9th Division in the North African Campaign, winning the Distinguished Service Order for bravery at Tobruk, Libya in 1941. He later commanded the 20th Infantry Brigade, fighting in the battle of El Alamein, Egypt where he earned a bar to his D.S.O. He commanded the 20th Brigade in New Guinea and Borneo and was appointed C.B.E. in 1945. After the war he served with the Citizens Military Force and lectured at the University of Sydney while continuing to work as a barrister. He was counsel assisting the royal commission on espionage in 1955 after Petrov’s defection, and was appointed to the bench of the High Court in 1958. He was created a Knight Commander of the Order of British Empire the same year. Windeyer retired from the High Court in 1972.
