David Maurice Smith is a Canadian born documentary photographer based in Sydney. His previous profession was as a social worker and his photography largely focusses on cross-cultural issues and people living in marginalised communities.

Between 2010-2014, Smith visited the remote N.S.W. town of Wilcannia and formed relationships with people from the Barkindji Aboriginal community whom he photographed in their daily lives. Smith's photographs in Wilcannia have been curated in multimedia photographic essays including Faces of Wilcannia (2012) and Living in the Shadows (2014) which was exhibited at Blackeye Gallery, Darlinghurst. Living in the Shadows was supported by a grant Smith received in 2013 from the Australian photography collective POOL.
