Ellis appears to be a goldminer in 1860s at Lambing Flat, near Burrangong, before he later settled in Araluen as a shopkeeper and farmer. - Scope and ContentThree letters and undated fragments from J. Thompson Ellis, 1863-1876, written to his sister, father and brother in Liverpool, England. The letters contain family news and glimpses of life on the gold fields. The 1863 letter also contains a description of a raid by bushrangers. One fragment refers to the notorious bushranger Frank Gardiner, dating it to 1874.
