  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Robert Francis Pockley (1823-1892) went to sea in 1832 and obtained his master's ticket in 1841. He brought the Barque Tobago to Sydney in 1842 and was master of the Emma on the Sydney to Hobart run. He became a shipowner and harbourmaster of Sydney in the 1850s. He married Selina Antill (1837-1924) in 1854. They had 15 children including Robert Francis, Eric Osbaldistone, Ella, and Enid Marguerite.

    Enid Marguerite Pockley (1879-1970) travelled to Europe in 1895. In 1897 she married Dr Henry Critchley Hinder in Jersey. Dr Hinder died in 1913 and she married Robert Holloway in 1916.

    Florence Elizabeth Holloway (1874-1957), brother of Robert Holloway, was born in Wagga Wagga New South Wales and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force as an unmarried women on 27/8/1917 at the age of 43. She served as a nurse in England and Egypt, and was discharged 16/3/1920.

    Robert Emerson Curtis (1898- ) was born in England, and arrived in NSW in 1924. He established himself primarily as a commercial artist, who specialised in documentary illustration. He drew the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, worked for B.H.P. and also documented projects such as the Sydney Opera House and the Gladesville Bridge. He was also commissioned to design murals and posters.
