Organ builder Ronald Sharp was born in Sydney on 8 August 1929. Although having no formal training, Sharp built his first organ in 1960 for the chancel of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, using electric action. Shortly afterward he adopted mechanical action, culminating in his first major work in this style for Knox Grammar School, Sydney (1965). Sharp later built organs for the Wollongong Town Hall, Perth Concert Hall, Ormond College at the University of Melbourne, and St John’s Church Canberra. He is best known for the monumental instrument in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall (1969-79; 5/126), the largest mechanical-action organ in the world.
