  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Donald Peter Macdonald was born in London on 3 August 1886 and arrived in Australia in 1895. He attended Newington College and then studied theology with the Methodist Church before serving in Lismore, Coonamble, and Harden. In 1911 he returned to England, married, and accepted a position as minister of the Presbyterian Church at Minard, Scotland. He returned to Australia in 1913 and was minister firstly at Ultimo Presbyterian Church and then at Mosman from 1915 to 1941. During the First World War he was a military chaplain from 1917 to 1919 and served on the Western Front. In 1914 he was elected as independent member for Mosman in the NSW Parliament. He retired in 1947 and moved to Mudgee. He was awarded the MBE in 1962 and died in the same year.

    His son, Roderick Kenneth Macdonald, was born in 1913. He was educated at Scots College and Sydney University. He joined the 'Sydney Morning Herald' in 1931. During the Second World War he served as a war correspondent in Chung-king, North Africa and Italy. In 1944 he published 'Dawn like Thunder which related his experiences as a correspondent; He was killed at Cassino, Italy in 1944.
