  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Private Claude Stanley Smith, a manufacturer's agent of Petersham, New South Wales, was born in Newcastle. He enlisted 24 Aug. 1914 aged 28, and embarked on board Transport A19 Afric with the First Expeditionary Force from Sydney on 18 Oct. 1914. He served in Gallipoli with 1st Infantry Brigade, 26 Apr. 1915, was wounded on 9 Aug. 1915, and hospitalised with influenza in England. He married Marjorie Knaggs, April 1917 and returned to Australia on the Balmoral Castle, 2 Dec. 1918. He died in 1947.

    The first issue of 'The Kangaroo: Out of His Element' was published in October 1914. The last marine issue was published in November 1914.

    1. Letter from Smith to his sister, October 1914. The letter is written on the back of the first issue of 'The Kangaroo: Out of His Element', a newsletter published on board the troopship 'Afric'. The newsletter is printed on cloth in black ink.

    2. Another issue of 'The Kangaroo; Out of His Element', vol. 1, no. 23, 28 November 1914, printed on cloth in red ink.

    3. Typed transcript of a letter from Smith to his sister, written from Gallipoli, 15 June 1915. Transcribed by his youngest daughter, Elaine Mayer, 2014-2015. Original letter not included.
