Clive William McLachlan was born in September 1917 and lived in Smithfield N.S.W. He was 22 when he enlisted on the May 31, 1940 for the Australian Infantry Force. He was sent to the Middle East until 1942, then to New Guinea and finally was stationed in the Pacific at Balikpapan on the east coast of Borneo.

The drawings of watercolour, pen and ink on 61 envelopes, addressed to Miss P. Della Valle, depict a variety of scenes including people, wildlife and landscapes of Borneo to everyday life as a soldier and representations of Japanese prisoners. Many are done in a cartoon fashion and are of a humorous and light-hearted nature. The album also contains other souvenirs such as news clippings, postcards and 6 notes of Japanese occupation currency for Dutch East Indies called the Gulden. Also shown are 2 photographs of Clive McLachlan in uniform.

10 issues of Table tops, issued by Australian Military Forces Abroad. 11 August, 1945 to 27 October, 1945. A free newspaper issued to the troops.

Also includes 2 typescript notices from the Australian Advanced Base Post Office in Balikpapan. Dated 17 October 1945, and Undated (pre-October 1945).

Included are 2 printed propaganda leaflets issued probably by the Far Eastern Liaison Office telling the Japanese of the acceptance of the Emperor and the Japanese Government of the Potsdam Declaration of 1945. Japanese transcript.
