  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Walter Lawry was a Methodist missionary who came to Australia as a chaplain on the convict ship, Lady Castlereagh in 1818. He was instrumental in the development of the Methodist Church in Australia having established a Methodist church at Parramatta and services in Bathurst. In 1822 he was appointed missionary in the Friendly Islands (Tonga group). Upon his return to New South Wales, Lawry requested permission to return to England, which forms the subject of this letter. His request was however denied and he was appointed to service in Van Diemen's Land, an appointment he disregarded, returning to England in 1825. In England, Lawry was able to reconcile his differences with the Church and continued his service, later being appointed superintendent of the New Zealand Mission. In his final years, Lawry returned to Parramatta where he died in 1859.
