  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The image was photographed by Henry James Lowe and George Downes who had enlisted in Sydney in 1914 and were serving at Gallipoli with the 1st Australian Railway Supply Detachment. The two men, together with Arthur Cook, later produced a series of 41 photographs entitled With the Camera at Anzac which they copyrighted in 1919 (now held by the National Archives of Australia).

A large area of North Beach became available after the occupation of Suvla Bay in August. Up to that time Anzac Cove was the sole harbour. The No. 1 Australian Stationary Hospital was set up as winter approached and the injured men did not have to be moved to Lemnos Island.

  • Collection history
Photograph given to Stuart Braga by Jean Dunlop ca. 1988
  • Scope and Content
Photographic postcard showing a panoramic view of North Beach, Anzac Cove, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, including the No.1 Australian Stationary Hospital. The Sphinx, Plugge's Plateau and Russell’s Top ridges can be seen in the distance. The photograph was probably taken from a naval vessel as the view is some distance from the shore. The military establishment can be clearly seen consisting of tents, sheds, two piers (Williams and Walker), stores and ammunitions. The excavations and terraces on the hillside are also visible. On the far left can be seen the 16th British Casualty Clearing Station.

On verso there are standard postcard details with the imprint "Philip G. Hunt, 332 Balham High Road, London, S.W."
