  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Miss Morton was born in Camden and her father was Dr Selby Mars Morton and her mother Ann Isabel Morton. She worked as a nurse during World War I with her rank at enlistment as being`masseuse’ with the No. 2 Australian General Hospital 1 to 16 and Special Reinforcements and at the time of embarkation she lived at `Beverly’ Flood Street, Little Coogee, Sydney.

    She enlisted on the 3 November 1915 and returned to Australia on the 23 September 1919. Her service during the war was spent on the Western Front, Egypt and England. She died on the 17 January 1976.

  • Collection history
    The album was originally owned by Iris and Walter Welch who were friends of Miss Mars Morton.
  • Scope and Content
    The album features photographs taken during her time stationed in England (Dartford) and Egypt (Cairo, Luxor). Included is a photograph of a koala perched on the ship Orsova’s lifesaver, the same ship that Miss Mars Morton departed Sydney. There are also images of local people, mosques and places in Egypt and England including nurses, the hospital in Dartford (No. 3 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford) and Christmas celebrated in 1915 at the No. 1 Australian General Hospital (Heliopolis Palace Hotel, Cairo).
