This painting was the centrepiece of a display at the 'Sydney Morning Herald' Art Gallery which opened in December 1934. It was reproduced in an article on the gallery in 'The Home' magazine, 1 Feb, 1935.

The painting depicts a map of Australia clearly showing the states and territories, surrounded by ocean. There is some pictorial detail on the painting including ships in the surrounding oceans, figures, presumably of Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory and trees in the outer areas of the map. The top left of the painting shows a shield containing the badges of all the states of Australia surrounded by an ermine border and the top right shows a verse which reads “From all division let our land be free / for God has made her one, complete she lies / with the unbroken circle of the skies / and around her indivisible the sea / breaks on the single shore”.

The painting has the lower portion of the canvas folded under a stretcher bar. This has obscured part of the signature. The painting has the original rope border around the canvas.
