  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Henry White was a theatre architect who was born in New Zealand in 1852. After constructing His Majesty's Theatre in Wellington, in 1915 he began work on designing Australian theatres. His work includes the Capitol Theatre, The Majestic (Elizabethan) at Newtown and The Tivoli in Brisbane.

The St James Theatre was established by theatrical entrepreneurs Sir Benjamin and Mr John Fuller in 1926. The theatre was designed in a dress circle shape with a silver and blue colour scheme with rose tinted curtains and described as 'magnificent'. In 1934 the Theatre moved permanently to screening movies when it was bought by MGM. It closed in 1971 to make way for an office development.
