  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society was constituted in London in 1818, and in the same year a mission for convicts was founded in New South Wales, with work beginning in other colonies in Australia, New Zealand and the South Seas in later years. In 1855, the Australasian Methodist Missionary Society was granted autonomy, with Stephen Rabone, John Eggleston and Benjamin Chapman serving as general secretaries over the following decades.

    The collection largely comprises letters from Methodist clergy and missionaries to the general secretaries of the Australasian Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society in Sydney, most addressed to Rev. S. Rabone, and some to Rev. J. Eggleston and to Rev. B. Chapman. Also included are photographs, reports and articles relating to the Methodist Church and its missions. Catalogue numbers included in item descriptions refer to the listings in B 1503.

    Thirteen photographic prints and two drawings, all mounted on card, depicting Wesleyan churches, clergy and documents, most mounts stamped or marked ‘The Crown Studios’. This material was most likely assembled by James Colwell for use in his book ‘The Illustrated History of Methodism. Australia 1812 to 1855; New South Wales and Polynesia 1856 to 1902.’ Sydney: William Brooks and Co., 1904.

    Volume stamped on spine ‘Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society material purchased 1915-6’ containing a list of material submitted by Angus and Robertson to the N.S.W. Public Library in 1915 and subsequently purchased. The entries are numbered from 1-1339.
  • System of arrangement
    The original arrangement of the letters is not known, although some letters are numbered in ink. The letters were at a subsequent time arranged in bundles or ‘items’ organised either by correspondent name or location, and this arrangement has been preserved. In some cases these groupings are consistent with the catalogue numbers in B 1503.
