Painted by artist Henry Aloysius Hanke (1901-1989) who won the Archibald Prize in 1934 (for a self-portrait) and the inaugural Sulman prize in 1936. The portrait painting of Major Hubert Wesley Grace was a finalist in the Archibald Prize for 1951.

The sitter, Major Hubert Wesley Grace (1888-1966) was President of the Australian Watercolour Institute (1950-1951), an art collector and amateur watercolourist of some note. Grace was associated with the Artarmon Galleries, and after he died in 1966 this painting and others in his Estate were passed by his son, Gordon Grace, to the Artarmon Galleries.

A framed oil painting on canvas is of an elderly man in blue suit with a buttoned vest, he is holding his hat and is seated with his legs crossed in a formal three-quarter portrait.
