  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Thomas Hassall (1794-1868), Anglican clergyman, was born at Coventry, England, the eldest child of missionaries Rowland and Elizabeth Hassall. He grew up in Parramatta, New South Wales, and in 1817 sailed for England in order to study for the ministry, being ordained in 1821. He preached his first Australian sermon in 1822 at St. John's, Parramatta, where he was curate to Samuel Marsden. By 1824 he was appointed a colonial chaplain, his first appointment being to the penal settlement at Port Macquarie where he was authorised to build a church. The foundation stone of St Thomas’ Church was laid that year. In 1926 Hassall was appointed to the Bathurst district, and later served in other parishes to the south-west of Sydney.
Ann Hassall, who usually signed her name 'Anne', was the eldest daughter of Samuel Marsden and his wife Elizabeth, nee Fristan. She was born in 1794 aboard the ship 'William' which was carrying Marsden and his wife to Port Jackson. She and Thomas Hassall were married in 1822. Ann Hassall died in 1885.
