  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Richard Holywell (Dick) Morris (1915-2000) was born in Western Australia but then moved to New South Wales and was educated at Shore School in Sydney (1927-1931) and Maitland High where he matriculated in 1934. He enlisted in 1940 and served in the Middle East, New Guinea and Borneo. He first arrived in Borneo with the AIF and served as a colonial administrator from the time of the Japanese surrender at the end of World War 2 until independence. He was one of only two Australians to have served the last White Rajah of Sarawak, Charles Vyner Brooke. He was also one of very few Australians to be employed in the post-war British Colonial Service. In 1962, he and his wife Dorothy Joan Morris (1915-2002) became hostages in the remote town of Limbang in British North Borneo during the Brunei Rebellion. They were rescued by the Royal Marine Commando, led by the 34 year old Captain Jeremy Moore, who took on more than 400 rebels to rescue an unknown number of hostages. In retirement, Dick and Dorothy Morris spent the remainder of their lives in Sydney (1964-2002).

Eileen Chanin, historian, author and daughter-in-law to Dick and Dorothy Morris, is author of 'Limbang Rebellion: 7 Days in December 1962' (Sydney: New South Publishing, 2013). Chanin’s book is the first book devoted to the story of the hostage rescue in Limbang from the hostages' point of view. What happened in Limbang was significant as a prelude to Malaysia’s confrontation ('Konfrontasi') with Indonesia – the tense diplomatic and military standoff between 1963 and 1966 which helped to convince Sarawak to join in the formation of Malaysia.
