  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Mr Herbert Ernest Ross was a senior partner in the firm Messrs Ross & Rowe (architect and consulting engineer). He was a son of Mr. Colin Ross, one of the pioneers of Inverell, where he was born on March 4, 1868. His father opened the first flour mill in the north of the State in 1855. He was educated at Queen's School, Darlinghurst, and then proceeded to Edinburgh-University. Upon his return he engaged for some years in mining, engineering, and railway construction work in Queensland. He later continued his studies at Sydney University. He began practice as an architect in 1902, and designed many large buildings, including the Government Savings Bank (now the Commonwealth Savings Bank), Mark Foy's, Ltd., and the beam wireless stations in Victoria. In 1921 he was appointed architect on the Federal Capital Advisory Board. He held the position for six years until the new city was established. Mr. Ross travelled extensively throughout Australia, and his practice included buildings of public, commercial, and industrial nature, and extended to railway, municipal, and hydraulic engineering. He was a member of the Australian Club. Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Royal Sydney Golf Club, a life member of the Royal Auto-mobile Club, Royal Agricultural Society, and Royal Historical Society, and a member of the Royal Society of New South Wales.

    Typescript manuscript 'Mount Morgan' with enclosed letter sent from H.E. Ross (Gladestone, Queensland) to his sister May Ross, 28 October.

    Small glass tablet bottle, ca. 1892, containing gold fragments from the Mount Morgan Mine. Bottle is embossed 'B.W.&Co.' (Burroughs Wellcome & Co.) and 'TABLOID' on either side. The metal screw cap is embossed, 'Wellcome Chemical Works. Over 270 Highest Awards'.
