  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lilian Daphne Mayo, sculptor, was born in Balmain, Sydney, though spent the majority of her life in Brisbane. In 1914 she was awarded a travelling art scholarship which, after the delay of the outbreak of war, led her to study at the Royal College of Art in London and the Sculpture School of the Royal Academy of Arts. Returning to Brisbane in 1925, Mayo worked on a series of public commissions which included the Brisbane City Hall tympanum (1927–30), the Queensland Women’s War Memorial in Anzac Square (1929–32) and relief panels for the original chapel at Mount Thompson Crematorium (1934). Between 1938–39 Mayo travelled through Europe and North America to gain inspiration from new developments in artistic practice.

When in 1940 the principal librarian of the Public Library of New South Wales, Wiliam Ifould, was selecting sculptors to produce bas reliefs for the bronze doors of the new Mitchell Library, he commissioned Daphne Mayo to produce all 18 panels for the eastern doors. Mayo's original sculptures, all depicting Aboriginal people, were cast by the manufacturing company Wunderlich in clay and plaster before they were cast in bronze.
