  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The suburb of Warwick Farm has long been associated with the horse racing industry in New South Wales. Warwick Park estate was sold in 1882 to William Forrester, who changed the name to Warwick Farm to match his initials. Forrester became one of the most successful trainers of his time and in 1889 he and Edwin Oatley were the principals in the formation of the Warwick Farm Racing Club.
  • Scope and Content
A chromolithograph, titled, 'The Silks and Satins of New South Wales, dedicated by special permission to the Australian Jockey Club'.
A key (5.5 x 29.5 cm.) is pasted over the bottom of the image and identifies the owners of the colours.

Set against the background of Warwick Farm Racecourse in New South Wales, the work depicts 34 jockeys on horses wearing the colours of 34 barons of the turf including William ‘Black Bill’ Forrester, the racecourse’s owner. Other prominent horse owners include Samuel Hordern and the Hon. James White, who was the only racing identity to be represented posthumously.
