  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William McGrath, a clerk of Melbourne, Vic. enlisted in the A.I.F. aged 27, 18 Sept. 1914 and trained at Broadmeadows camp where he worked as a clerk before being made corporal in B Squadron, 8th Light Horse Regiment, Jan 1915. He embarked from Australia on A 16 Star of Victoria, 25 Feb. 1915 and served at Gallipoli, fighting in the trenches at Walkers Ridge, and in Palestine. He was wounded Oct. 1915, was promoted to acting major and 2nd lieutenant, was mentioned in despatches, and in Jan. 1918 was awarded the Military Cross for actions which culminated in the capture of Jerusalem. He returned to Australia on H.T. Malta, Aug. 1919. McGrath also served with the Citizen Military Forces in Australia, 1939-1944 after being posted to 12 Garrison Battalion at Broadmeadow with the rank of captain, Oct. 1939.

    Herbert John Wilson, a labourer of Newcastle, N.S.W., enlisted 27 May 1915 aged 22 and embarked on A 23 Suffolk, 28 July 1915. He served with the 17th Battalion at Gallipoli and in France and died at 57th Field Ambulance from gunshot wounds received in action, 28 July 1917
