  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Major Archibald Clunes Innes was born in Scotland in 1800 and began his military service at the age of 13 in the Peninsular War. He came to Sydney in 1822 as captain of the guard in the convict ship Eliza and occupied various positions in the colony until 1830 when he was made Police Magistrate at Port Macquarie where he moved with his new wife Margaret (nee Macleay).

In Port Macquarie Innes received a land grant of 2568 acres which, with the use of convict labour, he transformed into a grand estate named Lake Innes. The estate featured a home of some 22 rooms, a large verandah facing the lake, stables, outbuildings and manicured gardens. Innes' acquired many more properties in the area, and established cattle and sheep stations, sugar cane fields and vineyards. However by 1842, during the depression years, Innes lost his wealth and was forced to leave his property becoming assistant gold commissioner and magistrate at Nundle and later police magistrate at Newcastle where he died in 1857.

The relationship of Major Archibald Innes to 'John Innes' is not known in this record.
