  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir Edward Strickland was born on 7 August 1821 in Ireland and first came to New South Wales in 1840 as part of several international postings he carried out in service to the British Commissariat.

    Upon retirement Strickland returned to Sydney in 1881 where he settled and continued to be active in public life including serving as vice-president of the Geographical Society of Australasia, founding the society's New South Wales branch and publishing several papers relating to colonial issues. Strickland died in Sydney on 18 July 1889.
