The inaugural Edna Ryan Awards, known as the ‘EDNAs’, were held in 1998. They were created by a group of her friends and the NSW Women’s Electoral Lobby to honour her life and work, and to acknowledge the contributions other women make in the areas she cared about. They are a celebration of a political life and an affirmation of feminist activists.

The Women's Electoral Lobby hosted and administered the EDNAs from 1998 – 2010, There were no awards presented in 2011 and from 2012 onwards the awards are hosted by The Edna Ryan Awards Committee.

The 2012 Awards are supported by the Australian Services Union.

The Awards for 1998-2005 are held by the Jessie Street National Women's Library.
