  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Beryl Whiteley was born Beryl Martin in 1917. She married Clement Whiteley in 1936. Their first child was born in 1937 and named Wendy; her father called her Frannie. Brett Whiteley was born in 1939 and died in 1992. Brett's name for Beryl was 'Sning'. This later became 'Ning', the way in which his baby daughter Arkie pronounced it. In 1957 Beryl left Australia to live mainly in London. She returned to Australia in the 1990s.
    In 1999 Beryl Whiteley established the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship to enable young Australian artists to live and work in Paris.
