Geoffrey Evan Fairfax, the son of Sir James Reading Fairfax of "Ginahgulla", Bellevue Hill and his brother James Oswald Fairfax both became involved in the running of the Sydney Morning Herald following the death of their father in 1889. Geoffrey Fairfax lived at "Elaine", 550 New South Head Road, Double Bay and was a keen amateur photographer.

Geoffrey Fairfax's collection of glass plate negatives include Fairfax family events in Sydney and at their rural properties, the Blue Mountains, yachting at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (of which his father was commodore in 1884-1889, 1893-1895 and 1904-1913), tennis parties at "Gingahgulla" in Bellevue Hill, events at "Elaine" in Double Bay, as well as travel photographs in Java, Japan, Europe and England. This collection is a pictorial record of one of Australia's most powerful families. It portrays life in Sydney as enjoyed by the social elite.
