  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Douglas Thompson was born in 1932. As a professional photographer he trained in Southport Studio, Queensland. From 1950-1956 he was an RAAF photographer. Thompson also recorded the town of Leeton in 1951 and its fruit cannery. He was a winner in the 1970 Asahi Optical World photo Contest and illustrated the 1972 book Australian pottery by Kenneth Hood and Wanda Garnsey

The early 1970s saw the emergence of a national craft based movement and the establishment of the Crafts Council of Australia (later Craft Australia) in 1971. These photographs of craftspeople are some of the earliest practitioners in the new movement.

    Portraits from that period include:
Mollie Douglas, founding member of the Potters’ Society of NSW
Vivienne Binns, who helped found the Women’s Art Movement in Sydney
    Bernard Sahm
    Marea Gazzard
    Col Levy
Derek Smith, who established a pottery studio with the Doulton factory at Chatswood and later the Blackfriars Pottery at Chippendale
Peter Rushforth , widely regarded as the father of studio pottery in Australia
Patricia and Ivan Englund, Senior Head Teacher of Art at East Sydney Technical College
Peter Travis, sculptor, potter, designer and kite-maker, probably best known for designing Speedo’s ‘budgie smuggler’ in the 1960s
Les Blakebrough, foundation member of the first crafts board of the Australia Council
Wanda Garnsey, founder of Australian Pottery magazine

    Margaret Barr, choreographer
Gilbert and George [Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore], living sculptures
Jeffrey Joynton Smith, general manager of Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust
Stephen Skillitzi, known as the father of Australian studio glass.
