Writers Kate Grenville and Sue Woolfe published the book "Making Stories : How Ten Australian Novels Were Written" in 1991, and recorded 9 interviews with various authors, including themselves, for the book.

The idea of the book, which is still in print and used extensively in creative writing courses, was to put an early draft alongside the corresponding part of the published version, and the writer being interviewed talked about the process of reworking that first draft through to the final version. All of the writers have now become established and successful; however at the time of the interviews that was not the case for all. Several of the writers talk with frankness about the creative process. These interviews illuminate the writing process, and give researchers greater insight into the minds of these authors and the particular novels they discuss. Being writers themselves, the interviewers bring an insider's view, asking questions and prompting discussion that reflects the particular mindset of an author, thus eliciting fascinating responses from the authors interviewed.

This collection comes with associated papers which include first drafts of sections of the books discussed, that have not been previously made available. They also come with typed transcripts, and corrections and edits, so that a researcher will also gain an insight not only into the process of writing fiction, but also of the process that Kate Grenville and Sue Woolfe went through in producing "Making Stories".
