Sydney George Ure Smith (1887-1949) was a publisher and artist. He produced a quarterly art magazine, 'Art in Australia', and wrote books on the work of Australian artists. He contributed illustrations to the 'Sydney Mail' and illustrated many books. From 1921 until 1948 he was president of the Society of Artists, and in 1937 was awarded the O.B.E. for services to art. He produced etchings and drawings of old buildings mainly in and around Sydney. His choice of subject matter was partly an attempt to foster conservation of Australia's colonial heritage. Sydney Ure Smith lived in Macleay Street, Potts Point, from 1930 until his death in 1949.
