Trooper William Victor Weaber (1881 – 1918) of the 9th (and later 10th) Australian Light Horse Regiment, A.I.F., 26th Reinforcement Morea Group, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on board RMS Morea and served in Egypt and Palestine. Trooper Weaber was a 35 year old sheep farmer from Kojonup, Western Australia, who left behind his wife Eleanor and baby daughter Alice when he enlisted. - Scope and Content21 letters from Trooper William Victor Weaber to his mother (Mrs Bilney) and Aunt and back home in Kojonup. The letters date from February 1917 to May 1918, the final letter being written from the hospital in Port Said where he was to die from his wounds a short time later. Weaber had been shot in the thigh by a Turkish bullet at Es Salt. The letters are accompanied by the official notification from the Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing Information Bureau, Cairo, Egypt, advising Weaber’s death on 7 June 1918 and burial details. The collection also includes an In memoriam card, and two sympathy letters received by his mother.
The letters cover a range of topics including life on manoeuvres with the 10th Light Horse in the desert, comments about the Turks, discussion of historic sites and scenes in Egypt and Palestine, news of fellow soldiers, receiving parcels and letters from home, and gossip about people back in Kojonup. - Copying ConditionsCopyright status:: In copyright
