Robert Mugdan was born in Munich in 1922. He spent his later school years in England and during a school vacation was detained as an enemy alien. Along with more than 2,500 other detainees, he was sent to Australia on board the ‘Dunera’ in 1940. Following his release from detention, he served in the Australian Military Forces. He studied architecture at the University of Sydney and worked for Peddle Thorp & Walker in the early 1950s before establishing his own architectural practice in Chatswood in northern Sydney.
As business increased during the 1960s, Mugdan went into partnership with Frank Hadley, trading as Mugdan & Hadley until the partnership was later dissolved. In the 1990s, many of Mugdan’s commissions were for designing alterations and additions and consulting on remedial work. He died in 2012.

The collection comprises architectural drawings by Robert Mugdan for residential buildings, commercial developments and factories, chiefly in suburban Sydney. Unless otherwise noted, drawings are attributed to Mugdan & Hadley. Included are sketches, plans, elevations, sections and detail drawings, mainly original drawings on paper or film, with some reproductions. Also included in the collection are five photographs of houses and two bound reports by Mugdan.
