Adelaide Perry (1891-1973), influential and admired painter, printmaker and teacher, studied at the National Gallery schools under Bernard Hall and Frederick McCubbin. She exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society and was awarded the National Gallery of Victoria traveling scholarship in 1920. In Sydney by 1926, Perry was a member of the Society of Artists and a founder of the Contemporary Group. In the early 1930s she established the Adelaide Perry Art School in Bridge Street. - Scope and ContentThe scene shows 170-178 Phillip Street in the centre from a high vantage point through an open window, looking south along Phillip Street to King Street. The portico of St James Church is visible centre right, where the tram line swings into King St. The dogmen, shown along the right side of the image, could be involved in the construction or demolition of a building on the western side of Phillip Street.
