Bronwyn Bancroft is a Bandjalang artist of the Djanbun clan, born in Tenterfield. Her father was Aboriginal and her mother was of Scottish and Polish descent. She has illustrated and also authored numerous children’s publications and produces paintings, prints and textile designs. She first rose to widespread prominence in the 1980s and has been involved in advocating indigenous arts and education. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, both in major group and solo shows. Bancroft’s artistic style is contemporary indigenous, and colourful. During a 1994 interview she said: “I was an innovative and experimental enough artist to pursue and define my own Aboriginal imagery from within myself and my experience as an Aboriginal artist and person as opposed to just copying traditional imagery.” Her works have received both nominations and awards, and have been purchased and commissioned for state, corporate and private collections. She has illustrated many books for Australian authors since the 1990s. Of her 2013 autobiographical children's book 'Remembering Lionsville' she states “This book encapsulates the journey in a historical/social context of my Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal family”.
