  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Lionel Leece was born in 1894 in Hillgrove, NSW, where his father was a mechanical engineer on one of the gold mines. From 1919 Lionel worked in the Emmaville district for the Y-Water Mining Company and later worked at the Deep Lead Mine as an accountant. During WWII he worked for Bumah Malay Tin and operated mines for them in Emmaville, Tent Hill and Amosfield Queensland. In the 1940’s, he worked on gold and other mineral testing sites and also tested beach sands for minerals on Stradbroke and Bribie Islands for BHP. He also worked as an accountant at Ravensworth open cut mine near Singleton.
These papers provide insight into the process of boring, mineral prospecting and investment in Australia ca. 1925-ca. 1960, and consist of letters to clients outlining mineral and geological information of areas mostly within NSW detailing prospects for future mining operations. The papers also include financial and administrative documents of mining operations, descriptions of the mineral content of specific bores, copies of government publications, printed items, some maps of mining leases, and cross sections of mines.
