On 23 January 1940 a 13 year old boy, Maxwell Farrin, was swimming at North Brighton Beach in Botany Bay when he was attacked by a shark. Even though the shark was still circling the boy Sidney Owen swam out and brought him to the shore. Unfortunately he died a few minutes later. Owen was awarded to medals for bravery. - Scope and ContentScrapbook containing newcuttings about the attack, rescue and awards. Also contains the Royal Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society of N.S.W. program of awards made on 2 September 1940 which includes the citation for the Society's medal awarded to Sidney Owen.
