    On 23 January 1940 a 13 year old boy, Maxwell Farrin, was swimming at North Brighton Beach in Botany Bay when he was attacked by a shark. Even though the shark was still circling the boy Sidney Owen swam out and brought him to the shore. Unfortunately he died a few minutes later. Owen was awarded to medals for bravery.

    Scrapbook containing newcuttings about the attack, rescue and awards. Also contains the Royal Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society of N.S.W. program of awards made on 2 September 1940 which includes the citation for the Society's medal awarded to Sidney Owen.
