- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
HMS Bounty was built in 1784 in Hull as a merchant ship. It was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787 and renamed The Bounty. It was purchased for a voyage to Tahiti for the acquisition of breadfruits and for the transportation of the plants to the West Indies. The commanding officer was Lieutenant William Bligh. A mutiny took place in April 1789 and to escape detection, the mutineers burned the ship on 23 January, 1790. - Scope and Content1 bronze sheathing nail from His Majesty's armed vessel Bounty.

The nail was recovered by Dr. Luis Marden from the National Geographic Society, Washington from the sea bed at Pitcairn Island in 1957.
