  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Lord Wakehurst (1895-1970), 2nd Baron, was born at London in 1895. During World War I he served in Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine as a captain in the Royal Sussex Regiment and the Intelligence Corps. From 1919 to 1921 he worked in the British Foreign Office and later served two terms as a conservative member of the British Parliament from 1924 to 1929 and 1931 to 1936. In 1937 he was appointed Governor of New South Wales, a position he held until 1946.

    1. Letter received from Lord Wakehurst (presumably 3rd Baron), typescript photocopy of signed letter to Caroline Simpson concerning a copy of the 2nd Lord Wakehurst's draft autobiography, 21 Aug. 2001

    2. Unpublished autobiography of the 2nd Lord Wakehurst, being typescript with some manuscript annotations (photocopy), 15 chapters. His involvement with Australia is covered in chapters 10 to 13. Chapter 10 : Portrait of Waltzing Matilda; Chapter 11: Governor of New South Wales, i) In Peace 1937-1939; Chapter 12 : Governor of New South Wales, ii) In War 1940-1945; Chapter 13 : Governor of New South Wales iii) Looking forward.

    3. "My first fifty years" being a typescript photocopy marked 'commentary for an 18mm film made by Lord Wakehurst'. 22pp including some biographical information and description of events during Wakehurst's period in Australia.
