  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Victor Armstrong was born in June 1899 in Cooper's Shoot on the N.S.W. north coast. He enlisted at Lismore, N.S.W. age 18 in July 1916 and embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Benalla on November 9, 1916. He served in the 5th reinforcement of the 39th Battalion. He was wounded in action in France on June 9, 1918 and was reported to have 'very little hope of recovery'. He did recover, and was returned to Australia on the HT Takada December 24, 1918. He spent the remainder of his working life farming at Cooper's Shoot and raising four children with his wife Grace. He died in September 1967.

    Private Armstrong's diary, kept while he was a member of the 39th Battalion, A.I.F. Includes description of voyage from Australia to England onboard the Benalla, his time in London and experiences in action in the war zone.
