  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Stanley Parkes, historian, writer and teacher began research on Australian Aborigines during World War II when stationed in the Northern Territory. He later taught in a mission school at Brungle, near Tumut (N.S.W.) and gathered information from local Wiradjuri people. Stan Parkes' later research focus was the history of the Hunter Valley region in New South Wales including the local indigenous peoples, German immigration, and construction of The Great North Road. The Local History room of Cessnock Public Library is named in honor of Stan Parkes.
