  • Scope and Content
The Institution of Radio and Electrical Engineers [IREE] arose from the wide interest in the medium of Radio in the early twentieth century, and the increasing professionalisation of the field. Minutes from the predecessor organisation Wireless Institute of Australia [WIA] are the earliest records in the collection. The annual conferences of the Institute of Radio Engineers [successor to the WIA and preceding the IREE] and the published proceedings were a valuable resource when the field of radio transmission was undergoing tremendous growth - the publications are separately held by the Library. Included are records relating to the work that the Institution provided to the Australian government during World War 2 in radio communication. The IREE was unique in being granted a Royal Charter, which is part of this collection. There are hundreds of photographs of people and conferences.
Boxes numbered 1 to 13 contain textual records, and boxes 14 to 24 contain mainly photographs. The Royal Charter is outsize box 25X. The Presidents' Medallions chain of office is housed in its own (original) outsize box 26X.
