  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Coburn (1925-2006) was a prominent Australian abstract artist and art teacher. Originally from Queensland, he joined the navy during World War II and subsequently underwent art training and worked in New South Wales. Coburn was exhibited and awarded nationally and internationally to acclaim during his lifetime, gaining much fame in the 1960s and 1970s. He became head of the National Art School for a short time, and was awarded an Order of Australia. He became an activist in the 1980s and 1990s for several environmental and political causes. His artworks are held by a number of international, national and state cultural institutions, including many galleries and libraries.

    An abstract design for use by a peace group active in Sydney in the mid 1980s, Artists for nuclear disarmament. It is likely that the design was for a tapestry or banner, as pencil annotations on the back indicate proposed dimensions were 176 x 400 cm
