He was personally selected by John Dunmore Lang as the first minister of the Ebenezer Church at Portland Head on the Hawkesbury, where he remained until 1830. He became a prolific writer, especially after his brother co-founded the 'Sydney Herald' in 1831. Invited to start a second Presbyterian congregation he built the Scots Church in Kent Street near Bathurst Street in Sydney. The church opened for divine service in 1835, with McGarvie its minister. - Scope and ContentThe letter was written from John McGarvie in Sydney and addressed to George Hutchison in Glasgow. It refers to the death of John Moffatt, his mother's poor health and a monetary gift from his mother to the Hutchison children.
