  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sydenham Edwards (1768 – 8 February 1819) was a British natural history illustrator. After about two years' training, Edwards's work began to appear in Curtis's prestigious Botanical Magazine. His signature is noted first in 1788 on the drawing of a carnation. For the next twenty-seven years nearly all the plates in the journal were Edwards's work. He also contributed to the journals: Flora Londinensis and the New Botanic Garden. As well as producing drawings, he sometimes also engraved the plates. Edwards was also a notable artist of animal subjects, with examples of his works published in Rees's Cyclopaedia and the rare part-publication Cyanographia Britannica (1799–1805) which contains coloured engravings of British dogs which he produced himself as author, artist, and publisher.
  • Scope and Content
The hand-coloured print depicts a parrot from the Sydney region, possibly a Superb Parrot, also known as a Barraband’s Parakeet, or Green Leek Parrot, which is native to southeastern Australia. It is perched on a branch; however it is surrounded by distinctly English plants and background scene.
