    Peter Turnbull was born in Amble in Northumberland, England in 1889. He was the son of Mary Jane and William (a coal miner). After arriving in Australia, they lived at Kurri Kurri. Peter was working as a miner when he enlisted in July 1915 and served with the 19th Battalion and was later attached to the 4th Australian Division Signal Company and then the 13th Battalion. He was wounded in action in France and spent 2 months in hospital in England. He again served in France when he was awarded the Military Medal in July 1918 for his role as a linesman ensured ongoing communication between the advance battalion and companies at Vaire Wood, east of Corbie. He returned to Australia on the Benalla, 31 May 1919 and was discharged in 1919, medically unfit. By 1930 he was living at Weston near Kurri Kurri and working once again as a miner. He undertook the role of secretary of the Weston sub-branch of the Returned Servicemen's League from 1934-1936. He died in 1936 at the age of 47 leaving a widow and four children.
