  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Kooroora Club was founded by Major H. Morgan, Secretary of St. Luke's Hospital, in 1929, its principal aim being the raising of money for St. Luke's. The Club was non-party-political and non-sectarian, open to women engaged in professional and commercial work. Their rooms were situated in Scot Chambers, Penfold Place, Sydney.

The first patron of the Club was Elaine de Chair, daughter of Governor Dudley de Chair. Later Ruth Fairfax, mother of Sir Vincent Fairfax, was patron, from ca. 1935-1948.

Mrs Alexandra (Allie) Oliver (nee Cole) of Stanwell Park was founding President of the Kooroora Club.

A branch of the Sydney organisation was formed in Melbourne in 1932. A Literary and Debating Society also operated within the Club.

The Kooroora Club ceased functioning in 1969.
